You are disadvantaged from birth, missing a piece of your tail and your Mom and all your siblings are dead. The well-intentioned person who finds you doesn't know the first thing about caring for possums. Particularly a baby possum. What chance of survival?
The odds may have been stacked against this little guy from the outset but not only did he beat the odds and survive, but along the way he converted his carers into life-long possum-lovers.
It's difficult to imagine a more wonderful little creature. He was insanely intelligent, very inquisitive, and seriously fun to have around. The missing piece of tail may have hampered his ability to climb but it didn't stop him from getting to where he wanted to go. By the end of it all, we were living in his house.
And ours began with Rocko. I don't think either of us knew what to expect with trying to raise a possum in a house. Morgan being Morgan, of course raised him very much in her bedroom. He used the rest of the house for travel adventures, but her bedroom was very much his base.
That he would tolerate her dressing him up life a doll is a testament to his good nature. I just shook my head as every now and then he would appear in costume. But he didn't seem to mind. He wore the "only child" shirt with pride, if his smile was anything to go by.
I'm not sure either of us really bought into that love and lost concept. But the loss was huge and it was for his funeral that Morgan gave air to what became our forever funeral dirge. The chosen lament was a particular rendition of May the Circle Be Unbroken from Bioshock and it has (unfortunately) become our goodbye song ever since.
